La donna scimmia (Marco Ferreri, Italy, 1964)The Ape Woman is one of the better sort of 'sixties exploitation pieces churned out by Carlo Ponti. It stars Annie as a young woman afflicted by all-over bodily hair - including silky dark whiskers upon her face. She is discovered by a stereotypical Italian spiv who promises the nuns in whose kitchen she is hiding herself away he will marry her. What this guy actually has in mind is casting her in a jungle-themed sideshow act amusing the paying public by swinging from branch to branch of a sad-looking tree. You know, the sort of thing Delboy would set up for Rodney (and maybe Grandad too). Tasteless the premise may be, but the comedy is executed with surprising skill. As you would expect Annie brings an unsentimental charm to the role. Eventually she insists on sharing the marital bed with our cynical hero, who clearly wishes the thing was rather larger. The centrepiece is Annie's cabaret striptease, though by now she is looking less like an ape woman than a member of the cast of Cats. |
