Disclaimer: I honestly didn't know it was going to be about a naughty schoolgirl. At first this magical provincial drama focuses on teacher Irina Kupchenko, a typically beautiful, modest, and down-to-earth flower of young Russian womanhood, and thus a more than adequate heroine. On first acquaintance with Svetlana she reminded me of someone else. There was something in her stance, her countenance, and most of all in her tone of voice. Later it came to me: Maria Sharapova contesting a line call.
So she's a handsome and strong-willed girl then, if you want to put it politely. Selfish, manipulative, and spiteful if you don't. The havoc she wreaks in the classroom has her teachers on the brink of despair; a disruptive little minx straight out of a Czech spanking fetish video. And when it comes to romance ... well there's her nasty habit of reading the 'other people's letters' of the title. Have you ever seen such righteous anger as is written across the face of the young man she tries to hoodwink in this clip? It's the second time in a very short compilation that someone's had to count to ten and put aside the switch they're holding with an unspoken 'Yeah, alright, I know the law, but you think on...'.
When Sveta is invited to move in with Irina things look up. In their morning exercises she at last finds a constructive outlet for her natural bossiness. Can the kindly teacher mould the wayward girl into one more flower of young Russian womanhood?
I really didn't expect a bubble-bath scene (by the way, take a look at the state of the floor when the door's open - one reason why some of us don't have our young nieces to stay as often as we might). Sveta wheedles at Irina to scrub her back. Which of course she does (resistance to this girl's winsomest looks being futile, cf. Vania Tzvetkova in Barierata), but not without a certain if-I-do-it-like-this-perhaps-she-won't-ask-again over-vigourousness. That blow-up tiger bath toy was last seen pointedly having the air squeezed out of it to fit into her travelling bag by Sveta as she threatened to walk out of the teacher's home. So it's a symbol of friendship as powerful as any of the more obvious ones on screen, just an example of the depth of this exquisitely visualised masterpiece from the golden age of Soviet cinema.
