This notoriously demented giallo stars Mickey Hargitay as Herbert, a police psychologist with the career-blighting habit of actually carrying out himself the sex murders he is called in to investigate. Thank goodness for masochistic wives like Rita! At least when he's at home he can relax with a little harmless sadistic indulgence. Rita, like her contemporary Leonora Fani, had a beauty just too understated and delicate to be victimised in such cinematic vileness, which made her performances all the more powerful. She seems so suburban, and cries at the slightest thing. It's like witnessing wife-beating on Terry and June.
The first two clips are essentially the same scene, but the second one is heavily re-edited for the American market. This version was given a strong 'disturbed Vietnam veteran' slant, while the original Italian pretended to be set in London. It's interesting to see the differing treatment of this scene where Rita first reveals her latent masochism to her husband. The US version focuses on simple rough sex, while the Italian cut has a nice piece of torture. Giallo fans will know that most Italian homes and mental institutions are stocked with mediaeval weaponry and outmoded instruments of torture within easy reach of the violently disturbed patient or housewife, but I'm afraid I don't know quite what this gizmo Dr. Herbert uses on his wife is. It certainly cuts the skin of her back up nicely, and with wounds shallow enough to heal without a scar. It's a shame they don't at least give a hint of what to ask for in the shop, it's so embarrassing having to do a mime.
Clip number three is one of Rita's increasingly dark dreams. The figure you see laughing on the cellar steps is the maid, a quiet shy girl with strong autoerotic and voyeuristic tendencies, and barely concealed lesbian and masochistic leanings thrown in to the mix. She invites Rita and her cousin to writhe around naked with her, copping the odd feel, and taunting the chained and impotent Dr. Herbert. And it all looks great fun. The moment when Rita opens her eyes, only to close them again in dismay when she realises it was only a dream, is remarkably subtly done for such a pile of trash.
The fourth clip is another of Rita's lonely fantasies, and a truly wonderful piece of carnality. There's symbolism in it too, though perhaps a little too obscure to decode. So she's naked and in chains, and he's naked and in chains, and those two girls are naked and writhing on the floor, so if she releases her (and not him) to writhe on the floor in a lesbian threesome then... what does it all mean??

It's a happy day for Rita as her uncle throws an elaborate party in an ancient gothic pile to celebrate her engagement to an obvious Satanist. Or it would have been if that girl at the piano hadn't brought up that story about the burning as a witch of Rita's spit and image back in the thirteenth century. How very tin-eared of her. Her uncle has the most appalling visions, but Rita mistakes his tears for him being a sentimental old fool as usual. Rita plays the sad-eyed victim to perfection once again in another crazed pantomime from Polselli.
