I ragazzi del muretto S01E10: Uno scopo nella vita (Tomaso Sherman, 1991)
# L'amante scomoda (Luigi Russo, Italy, 1992) (featuring Cristina Garavaglia as Greta)
with Linda Carol, Frank Angelini, Antonio Zequila, Geoffrey Copleston, Manuela Milani, Francesca Leonardi and Donnina Turrini
From a strange nihilistic giallo by Luigi Russo, better known for his comedies. The unjustly obscure Russo resembled Joe D'Amato in being an accomplished cinematographer on his films as well as directing them, but was a little better at both tasks and much nearer the mainstream. This is his last film, made in the early 'nineties and exhibiting much of the ugliness and alienation of the cinema of that era. The photography is quite atmospheric, despite the unnatural blues and nasty yellow-brown casts typical of the time (it's probably supposed to be a golden glow, but I call it a yellow-brown cast).
The story starts off almost as a mellowed-out sequel to Russo's Pensione Amore, what with the bird (Cristina) prancing around on the beach again. But this time it's sunset rather than morning - could this be significant?
The plot appears to revolve around some sort of high-powered kitchen salesman (I shall call him Mike Sampson) who despite having a more than tolerably glamorous and sophisticated wife hankers after the bimbo who shares lovey-dovey phone calls with him sprawled upside-down on the sofa showing her pants. It's a very passionate affair. They make love hastily whenever they can in the usual places - a) on the beach b) in the car - and even in the not-so-usual-places - c) on the banisters (!). Mike can't even stop dreaming of Cristina when together with his wife in bed, as we see illustrated using a very irritating editing technique.
So I mentioned this was a giallo. Which means someone gets killed doesn't it? And it's probably going to be our Cristina? Right on both counts (or apparently so - the plot is demented even by the standards of the genre and I'm not going to go into it, except to mention the ending is distinctive in a way to please the nihilists in the audience). The second clip sees Cristina chased out of her bubble bath in a very long (I edited it down, and it doesn't actually finish here - I don't want to give away the ending and anyway it was quite enough) sequence that involves much scrabbling around on all fours and wriggling on the carpet and owes stylistic debts to both Dario Argento and Tinto Brass.
