# Exorcismo Negro (José Mojica Marins, Brazil, 1974) ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭

One of the long-running Coffin Joe horror series, this was made in the wake of The Exorcist. Director José Mojica Marins had it both ways by hamming it up as his fictional creation, the very embodiment of cruelty and swinishness, and playing his nemesis in the form of his caring and wholesome actual self. He also went on to make porn films. Ho hum.
Ariane plays the daughter of a family friend with whom Marins is staying over Christmas in the rainforest. This young woman, soon to be married, is the height of suburban respectability, blonde locks, snub nose, trouser suit and all. Various spooky things have been happening, predictable things and non-lethal (to humans), but still upsetting enough to make small children cry. One evening Marins hears low moans coming from Ariane's bedroom...
I suppose this scene could be taken as an object lesson in what to do when you hear low moans coming from a young niece's bedroom: you do nothing that's what. It's never wise to tap gently on the door and ask if she's 'all right'. And if you're fool enough to actually force the lock then having to watch the naked girl writhe demonically while screaming the name of a man who is not her fiancé as she hits you over the head with a big stick that's just been up her snatch is the very least you should expect to happen. 'Surely this bodes ill for her forthcoming marriage...' might be the last thought entering the sad pillock's brain before he passes out. But it turns out to be such a lovely ceremony, tragic or otherwise...
